Preserving ISKCON History

BoloHari.com is home to the ISKCON History Archive. We are conducting interviews with disciples and grand-disciples of Srila Prabhupada in order to research and write the history of ISKCON from 1977 to the present day. Excerpts from these interviews will be released on this site, along with drafts of chapters as the writing progresses.

Why Should ISKCON Study Its Own History?

In a 1998 article, Professor Thomas J. Hopkins emphasizes the importance of ISKCON documenting its own history. He notes that while focusing on Prabhupada's leadership is natural, neglecting the recent past undermines ISKCON's self-understanding. Read more.

In a 1992 interview with Satyarāja Prabhu, Shrivatsa Goswami of the Rādhā-ramaṇa Temple reflects on ISKCON's challenges and growth. He observes, "Problems are inevitable ... but Prabhupada has taught his followers well, and the proof is how they deal with their problems. ISKCON has come of age." Read more.

"We have to learn from our history, especially the younger devotees. You should learn from what we did right, and what we did wrong. It's not offensive to ask, 'what did you do wrong?' It's not offensive to ask, "'what should we do differently?' What's offensive is if you're ignorant and you create the same mistakes over again."
